How we’re different

Comparison shopping made easy

No need to fill out forms on a dozen different sites — with Policygenius’ modern tools, you can compare quotes from multiple leading insurance companies side by side in minutes. Already have coverage? We can help you re-shop your policy to look for a lower rate.

Advice that puts you first

With hundreds of licensed insurance agents standing by and thousands of fact-checked articles on our site, we’ve got answers to all of your questions, whether you want to talk to someone live or research on your own.

Rigorous editorial standards

Our articles are written and edited by a best-in-class editorial team, then thoroughly fact-checked by licensed insurance agents and certified financial planners. Read more about our editorial standards, including our editorial process, leaders, and expert reviewers.

How we make money

We’re an independent insurance broker, so we get paid a commission by insurance companies for each sale. Insurance commissions are already built into the price of an insurance policy, so you’re not paying any extra for working with us to buy a policy. Our compensation on any particular purchase may vary depending on a number of factors, including the type and size of product, the insurer, and the volume of business we have with an insurer, but we don’t push for or give preference to any one insurer over another because of the commission. We're here to fight for you, not for ourselves.

Save

Is it cheaper to buy insurance through Policygenius?

Insurance rates are regulated by law, which means that no company, broker, or agent can offer you a discount on a policy. You can still save money, though! Each insurer calculates risk differently, and they all strive to offer policies at competitive prices. That’s why Policygenius helps you compare quotes from multiple companies in one place: to make it easy to find potential savings on the right policy for your needs.

Policy Scan

Is Policygenius a corporate affiliate of any insurance company?

No. We’re an independent insurance agency, which means that we’re not owned by an insurance company, nor do we own one. We sell insurance policies from multiple insurers without bias or favor toward any of them. It’s important to us that we help you find the right insurance policy for your needs, no matter which company you buy that policy from.

Our licenses

All insurance brokers are required by law to be licensed in each state they do business. You can find our licenses here.

Our history

In the early 2010s, two McKinsey consultants, Jennifer Fitzgerald and Francois de Lame, realized the insurance industry was stuck in the Stone Age. Their idea: “Could we modernize life insurance online and help people feel good about finding the right coverage?”

In 2014, they launched a startup in New York City called…KnowItOwl. The name didn’t last, but the idea did. By the end of the following year, the rebranded Policygenius had already reached more than 800,000 people looking for the right life insurance.

Since then, we’ve expanded to offer home, auto, disability, renters, and other types of insurance. Today, we’ve helped millions of people find the best financial protection solutions for their needs — and judging from our reviews, we've helped them feel good about it.

To learn more about our history, check out NPR’s interview with Policygenius co-founder, Jennifer Fitzgerald, on the podcast How I Built This with Guy Raz.
